Superficially similar to banded demoiselle but wings of male bear much more extensive areas of dark bluish brown; those of female are duller brown than in female banded demoiselle. Body of male is bluish, that of female being green; metallic sheen seen in both sexes. Prefers fast-flowing clear streams where nymph lives buried in sand or gravel bottom. Flies from May­August. Locally common in S and C England and Wales; local in Ireland and absent from Scotland.
