Hoof Fungus
Fomes fomentarius
Up to 30cm across

Tough and rigid fungus which looks surprisingly like a hoof. It is found growing on the trunks of birch trees and is more-or-less confined to the Highlands of Scotland. The grey surface bears darker, horizontal ridges. Found all year.
