Height up to 40cm

Locally common plant of undisturbed grassland, found in C and S England, S Wales and C Ireland. Unmarked glossy green leaves form a basal rosette and sheathe the flowering stem. The flowers are borne in a compact spike, April­June, and vary from pink-purple to almost white. Upper petals in particular are marked with dark veins and often suffused green; the lip has red-dotted, pale central patch.
