Whiting Whiting
Merlangius merlangus
Length up to 50cm

Relative of the cod, often common in inshore waters over muddy or sandy seabeds. Body comparatively narrow and has upper jaw longer than lower jaw. First of two anal fins is long, starting mid-way along first dorsal fin and ending level with end of second dorsal fin. Sometimes seen while snorkelling but often in deeper water.
