Thornback Ray

Length up to 50cm

Has distinctive, diamond-shaped outline. Skin rough and with conspicuous spines down back and on dorsal surface of muscular tail. Common and widespread off coasts of S Britain and Ireland. Favours muddy and sandy seabeds and sometimes found trapped in pools at very low tide on expansive shores at estuary mouths.
