One of the classic flatfish, easily recognised by its oval outline and very short tail whose fin is not separated from dorsal and anal fins by any distinct tail stock. Lives on sandy and muddy seabeds, often in shallow water in estuary and river mouths. Common and widespread around coasts of Britain and Ireland.
