Length up to 15cm

Squat little fish with proportionately large, spiny head and tapering body. Body usually mottled grey-brown but often darker. Mouth rather large and gill covers spiny. Found among seaweed and stones on otherwise muddy or sandy seabeds. Common on suitable coasts around Britain and Ireland. A bottom-dwelling species.
