Extremely muscular, snake-like fish whose skin lacks scales and is variable in colour. Favours rocky coasts, often in deep water but sometimes shallow enough seas to be found at extreme low water hidden among rocks. Upper jaw just longer than lower jaw. Common and widespread around coasts of Britain and Ireland.
