A strange little fish with a rather tadpole-like appearance. Profile smooth with oval outline. Body colour variable but usually reddish grey. Anal fin fused with tail fin. Found mainly on muddy and sandy shores, often among rocky outcrops. Widespread around coasts of Britain and Ireland, commonest in SW.
