Length up to 60cm, often smaller

Common and widespread around coasts of Britain and Ireland. When small, often found in shoals near mouths of estuaries and in shallow, sheltered water. Larger specimens often solitary off shingle or rocky shores, sometimes in deep water. Young fish often show pinkish tinge but become more silvery-grey with age.
