Length up to 70cm

Member of salmon family. Relict species from last post-glacial era, now mostly confined to land-locked and isolated populations in deep, oligotrophic lakes in upland Britain and Ireland. Very local and confined to a few waterbodies in N Wales, Lake District, Scotland and Ireland. Also known as char; Welsh fish called torgoch. Body streamlined with small adipose fin. Male has greenish grey upperparts and bright red belly; colours on female much less intense.
