Widespread and often extremely common in ponds, lakes and slow-flowing streams. Rather woodlouse-like in appearance with flattened, segmented body but has very long antennae. Scuttles among water plants and scavenges organic matter from the sediment. In spring, female carries whitish eggs around with her in brood pouch.
