Widespread woodland butterfly but common only in S England; local further N and in Ireland and absent from much of Scotland. Double-brooded, flying April-June and July-September. Favours clearings and fond of sunbathing. Upperwings dark brown with pale markings; underwings rufous brown. Caterpillars feed on grasses.
