An upland butterfly, found very locally in N England and S and C Scotland. Favours woodland margins and moors where larval foodplant, purple moor-grass, common. Flies July-September but only active in sunny weather. Superficially ringlet-like but rich brown upperwings marked with orange band and eyespots.
