Restricted to SE and CS England. Although local within this range, often common in suitable habitats. Favours flower-rich, grassy meadows, often on chalk downs but also on neutral soils. Distinctive black and white patterns on wings. Flies July-August and visits knapweed and thistle flowers. Larva feeds on grasses.
