An attractive little butterfly. Has dark grey-brown upperwings marked with conspicuous white spots; underwings reddish brown but also showing numerous pale spots. Flies May-June. Confined mainly to S England and S Wales but there locally not uncommon. Favours rough grassland and woodland rides where larval foodplants, which include wild strawberry and cinquefoils, are common.
