Moth-like appearance with buzzing flight and dark grey-brown upperwings; underwings reddish brown. Sexes similar. Flies May-June and favours meadows and rough ground, sometimes in grassy woodland rides. Locally common in England and Wales but scarce in Scotland and Ireland. Caterpillar's main foodplant is bird's-foot trefoil but will also eat various species of vetch.
