Wingspan 25mm
Formerly found in C England but extinct there and now restricted to open birchwoods in NW Scotland where very local. Flies May-June. Upperwings rich brown with orange-yellow spots; underwings paler but also well marked with pale spots. Caterpillars feed on various grasses. Flight active and fast but fond of sunbathing; difficult to locate in dull weather.
