Winter visitor in variable numbers from October to March. If berry crop fails in NE Europe, birds forced to move W to Britain in large numbers. Can turn up almost anywhere but most records from SE and E England, often on berry bushes in towns and gardens. Plumage pinkish buff. Has prominent crest, black throat and mask, chestnut undertail and yellow-tipped tail. Wings have white and yellow margins and red, wax-like projections. Trilling call. Starling-like in flight.
