Length 23-28cm

Shy and retiring wetland species whose pig-like squealing calls are heard more than bird itself is seen. Has long, reddish bill, reddish legs and mainly blue-grey underparts and reddish brown upperparts; shows black and white barring on flanks. Surprisingly narrow body enables bird to pass through dense vegetation with ease. Favours extensive reedbeds, marshes and overgrown margins of watercress beds. Local and rather scarce breeding species but more widespread in winter in Britain and Ireland due to influx of continental birds.
