A widespread woodland resident in mainland Britain and Ireland. Unobtrusive and easily overlooked as it creeps up tree trunks; can look rather mouse-like. Has streaked brown upperparts, pale underparts and needle-like, downcurved bill. Spiky tail used as support when climbing. Has high-pitched
tseert call. Typically feeds by spiralling round and up tree then dropping down to base of adjacent trunk to repeat process. Feeds on invertebrates, mainly insects, prised from bark crevices with bill. Often nests under flaps of peeling dead bark.
