Scarce passage migrant, mainly to coasts of E England, but also very rare and erratic Scottish breeder. Adults mostly seen in spring but juveniles in autumn. Superficially similar to miniature common sandpiper with short, straight dark bill and yellowish legs. Adult has grey-brown upperparts and white upperparts with clear demarcation between dark breast and pale belly; in summer, shows dark centres to many feathers on back. Juvenile shows pale margins to feathers on back. White outer tail feathers seen in flight.
