A fairly common bird of farmland and open country with scattered woodland. Found locally throughout Britain and Ireland in suitable habitats as far N as S Scotland. Plumage lacks any prominent features and species recognised by uniform blue-grey upperparts and lack of white rump and white barring on neck; shows two narrow black wingbars on upper surface of inner wing. Feeds in flocks in arable fields, sometimes with woodpigeon. Nests in tree holes and, during breeding season, utters diagnostic and repetitive ooo-look call.
