Snipe
Gallinago gallinago
Length 27cm
Easily recognised, even in silhouette, by dumpy, rounded body, rather short legs and incredibly long, straight bill. Feeding method characteristic: probes vertically downwards with bill in soft mud, in manner of sewing machine. In good light, has buffish brown plumage, beautifully patterned with black and white lines and bars; has distinctive dark stripes on head. Locally common breeding species on marshy ground and moors in many parts of Britain and Ireland although absent from much of S England in summer months. More widespread in winter and found in a range of wetland habitats; resident British birds joined by visitors from N Europe. Utters one or two
kreech calls when flushed. Performs 'drumming' display in breeding season, humming sound produced by vibrating tail feathers.
