Long, flattened bill characteristic. Male striking with green head, black and white on body and reddish chestnut flanks. Female mottled brown. Both sexes have green speculum and pale blue panel on forewing. Scarce breeding species but common winter visitor to Britain and Ireland. Favours wetlands and flooded grasslands.
