Length 16-17cm

Does not breed in Britain but occurs as scarce winter visitor to coast, mainly E England; there favours shingle beaches and coastal grassland. Recognised by yellow and black facial pattern, colours pale in winter but brighter in breeding plumage birds which have short black tufts on head. Tsee-tsee flight call.
