Shag Shag
Phalacrocorax aristotelis
Length 65-80cm

Superficially similar to cormorant but smaller and with green, oily sheen visible at close range and in good light. Adult has narrow yellow patch at base of bill, most apparent in breeding season when crest on forehead also seen. Juvenile has dark brown upperparts and pale but grubby underparts, these darker than on juvenile cormorant. Found throughout year on rocky coasts around W and N Britain and Ireland. Seemingly indifferent to rough seas and dives often and for considerable periods; characteristically leaps out of water as it dives. Frequently seen perched on rocks with wings outstretched to dry.
