Characteristic of wetland habitats but also in drier areas of farmland too. In breeding season, male has head black except for white moustachial stripes; underparts pale and upperparts chestnut-brown. Male in winter has less distinct black head; female has striking dark moustachial stripes at all times. In flight, all birds show conspicuous white outer tail feathers. Has chinking song.
