A small but attractive thrush with grey-brown upperparts, prominent white stripe above eye, neatly spotted pale underparts and orange-red flush on flanks and underwings. Seen mainly as a winter visitor to almost all parts of Britain and Ireland from October to April; rare breeder in Scottish Highlands. Flocks are nomadic and numbers vary from year to year but usually a very common winter bird. Feeds on farmland and in woodland where it searches for worms and invertebrates. An opportunistic feeder, particularly in cold weather, and will feast on fallen apples and berries. Has high-pitched tseerp call.
