In winter plumage, similar to grey phalarope and best told by needle-like bill and more black and white appearance. In breeding season, female has white throat and red neck; male similar to duller. Habitually swims. Nests in small numbers in N Scotland and N and W Scottish Isles; rare and erratic breeder in N Ireland. Present on breeding grounds from May to August. Favours coastal moorland pools; often difficult to see among emergent vegetation. Tame but easily disturbed at nest and protected by law. Oceanic outside breeding season and seen around British and Irish coasts as scarce passage migrant and rare winter visitor.
