Red-necked Grebe Red-necked Grebe
Podiceps grisegena
Length 40-45cm

In winter plumage, superficially similar to great crested grebe but smaller and shows characteristic black-tipped yellow bill (bill of great crested is always pinkish). Red-necked grebe also lacks great crested's white eyestripe at this time of year. Although not a British nesting species, sometimes seen in breeding plumage with brick red neck, white cheeks and black cap. Most sightings, however, are of non-breeding plumage birds with records mainly from October to March. Favours sheltered coastal waters, mainly on E coast.
