True range SW and W mainland Europe but introduced to Britain and now well established, mainly in S and E England but locally further N and W. Sexes similar with red bill and legs, and white throat, bordered with gorget of black spots; plumage otherwise mainly blue-grey and warm buff except for black and white barring on flanks. Seen in small parties (covies), usually in arable fields. Male utters loud
chuka-chuka-chuka call, sometimes from fencepost.
