Red-backed Shrike Red-backed Shrike
Lanius collurio
Length 17cm

Almost extinct as breeding species but seen as scarce passage migrant in spring and autumn, mostly around coasts and especially in E Anglia. Striking male has reddish brown back, pale underparts flushed with pink and blue-grey cap with dark mask; tail black with white on sides at base. Female has much less distinct colours and markings, with crescent markings on underparts. Juvenile looks scaly due to crescent markings on plumage. Feeds on insects and small birds.
