Distinctive male (A) is aptly named with black upperparts, white underparts and bold white band on otherwise black wing. Female (B) has black elements of male's plumage replaced by brown. Locally common summer visitor from May to August. Favours open oakwoods. Restricted mainly to SW and NW England, Wales and S Scotland; absent from Ireland. Breeds in tree holes and readily takes to hole-fronted nestboxes. Forages and fly-catches in tree canopy. Male has sweet, ringing song.
