Linnet
Carduelis cannabina
Length 13-14cm
Common and widespread resident throughout much of lowland Britain and Ireland although scarce or absent from parts of N and W Scotland. Male has grey head and chestnut back; in breeding season, acquires rosy-pink patch on forecrown and on breast but this feature absent in winter months when male is rather similar to streaked, grey-brown female. Breeds on gorse- or bramble-covered slopes, heaths and scrubby grassland. Male often perches prominently to deliver his twittering, warbling song. Has greenfinch-like flight call. Forms small flocks in winter.
