Length 13-14cm
Superficially similar to whitethroat but distinguished by plumage, song and choice of habitat. Summer visitor, mainly to C and S Britain, from May to September and only locally common; absent from Ireland. Good view reveals blue-grey crown, dark mask, grey-brown, not rufous, back and wings and white throat and underparts. Favours mature hedgerows and woodland with dense undergrowth from cover of which male sings characteristic song comprising a tuneless rattle, sung on one note. Has rather retiring habits and utters harsh
chek call when alarmed. Feeds mainly on insects but also on berries in early autumn.
