Formerly more numerous but still common in many parts of Britain and Ireland. Breeds on undisturbed farmland and on moors and open country throughout. N birds move S outside breeding season and, in winter, British population boosted by influx of continental birds. Looks black and white at a distance but in good light has green, oily sheen on back; winter birds have buffish fringes to feathers on back. Spiky crest feathers longer in male than female. In flight, has rounded, black and white wings and flapping flight. Loud
