Colourful bird but wary nature ensures that colours seldom seen to best effect. Woodland resident, widespread and common in most of England and Wales but scarce and local in Ireland and Scotland. Pinkish buff body plumage except for white undertail and rump, latter most conspicuous as bird flies away and emphasised by black tail. Wings have black and white pattern and chequerboard patch of blue, black and white. Utters loud, raucous kraah call. Buries acorns in autumn.
