Honey Buzzard Honey Buzzard
Pernis apivorus
Wingspan 135-150cm

Superficially similar to buzzard but underparts paler; shows dark carpal patches on wings. Tail proportionately longer with two broad bands near base and broad, dark terminal band; these features separate it from buzzard. In flight, head appears narrow, pointed and pale. Soars on flat wings. Rare summer visitor to S and C England, present from May to September. Favours areas of undisturbed woodland where wasp and bee colonies common: feeds on their larvae.
