Attractive, long-legged wader which looks very white at distance. Rare breeding species on moorland in C and N Scotland. More usually seen as passage migrant and local winter resident further S in Britain and Ireland. In all plumages, has yellowish green legs and long, slightly upturned bill with grey base. Winter adult pale grey above with white underparts; in breeding season, some feathers on back acquire dark centres. Juvenile has brownish upperparts. In flight, all birds show uniform wings and white rump and wedge up back. Feeds in deliberate, probing manner. Flight call a distinctive, trisyllabic tchu-tchu-tchu.
