Widespread throughout most of mainland Britain and Ireland although scarce N of C Scotland. A familiar bird of gardens, parks and farmland but absent from many wooded and upland areas with its range. In full breeding plumage, male is very bright yellow-green but for most of year colours are duller; female has grey-green plumage and juvenile is streaked. All birds show yellow wing patches and have yellow rumps and sides to tail. Bill pinkish and conical, used for feeding on seeds. Outside breeding season, forms flocks which feed on stubble fields and grain spills. Winter visitor to garden bird feeders. Has wheezy
