Green Woodpecker
Picus viridis
Length 32cm
Despite size and bright, colourful plumage, can be surprisingly difficult to see. Usually rather wary and often prefers to hide behind tree trunk rather than show itself. Sometimes seen feeding on lawn or area of short grass when green back, greenish buff underparts and red and black facial markings can be seen; uses long tongue to collect ants. If disturbed, flies off revealing bright yellow-green rump. Spiky tail gives support when climbing tree trunk. Presence often detected by loud and distinctive
yaffling call. Stout, dagger-like bill used to excavate wood for insect larvae and to create nest hole. Fairly common and widespread resident breeding bird in England and Wales but becomes scarce towards Scottish border; absent from Ireland. Favours open, deciduous woodland.
