Common woodland and garden species, appreciably larger than blue tit alongside which it is often seen at bird feeders. Has bold black and white markings on head and black bib forming line running down chest, broader in male than female. Underparts otherwise yellow and upperparts mainly greenish. Juvenile has sombre plumage with no white on head. Song is extremely variable but a striking teecha teecha teecha rendered by most males. Feeds mainly on insects in summer months.
