Great Crested Grebe

Length 46-51cm
Slender water bird with long, thin neck; the largest British grebe species. Looks strikingly black and white at a distance although upperparts mainly grey-brown and underparts white. In summer, both sexes acquire prominent orange-rufous ruff and show crest to dark cap. In winter, loses ruff but retains dark cap and suggestion of crest. Pairs perform elaborate ritual displays in spring. Builds floating nest among emergent vegetation on lakes and gravel pits. Breeds throughout Britain and Ireland to S Scotland. In winter, often around coasts.
