Formerly extinct as breeding species but now present in small numbers in England, Wales and Scotland. Similar in silhouette to sparrowhawk but much larger. Male noticeably smaller than female but both sexes have grey-brown upperparts and pale underparts with dark barring. Staring yellow eyes, white stripe over eye and yellow legs only visible at close range. Usually seen circling high above when white undertail feathers often fluffed out. Favours extensive forests. Medium-sized birds such as woodpigeons caught in flight.
