Goosander
Mergus merganser
Length 58-66cm
Large, elegant sawbill duck, almost exclusively associated with freshwater. Male is unmistakable with red, serrated-edged bill, green-glossed head, white body and black back. Looks very white at a distance but close view reveals feathers to be flushed with delicate shade of pink. Female also has reddish bill but head is orange-red with shaggy crest; body plumage greyish, palest on breast. Both sexes show considerable amount of white on wings in flight. Nests in tree holes beside larger rivers in Scotland, N England and parts of Wales. In winter, seen in small flocks on lakes, reservoirs, flooded gravel pits and substantial rivers. Swims buoyantly and retains stately appearance even when moving at speed. Dives well and for long periods in search of fish.
