Length 42-50cm

Distinctive diving duck, male (A) with mainly black and white plumage; has rounded, green-glossed head with yellow eye and conspicuous white patch at base of bill. Female (B) has grey-brown body plumage separated from dark brown head by pale neck. Both sexes show white on wings in flight. Common winter visitor to Britain and Ireland on both lakes and coasts. Scarce breeding bird in Scottish Highlands.
