Our only summer migrant duck. Arrives from African wintering grounds in March and stays until August. Male has reddish brown head and broad white stripe above and behind eye; breast brown but plumage otherwise greyish. Mottled brown female similar to female teal and best told by association with male or by blue forewing panel, seen in male as well. Breeds in small numbers in wetland habitats and also seen as passage migrant. Male has distinctive rattling call.
