Locally common dabbling duck. Breeds locally, especially E Anglia, but more widespread and numerous as winter visitor. Both sexes have white on speculum, best seen in flight. Male has dark bill and pale brown head. Plumage otherwise grey-brown except for diagnostic black stern, prominent when bird upends to feed. Female similar to female mallard and best identified by association with male or glimpse of white speculum. Favours lakes, reservoirs and gravel pits.
