Length 25-26cm

A large thrush, seen mainly as a winter visitor from October to March, although a few pairs breed in Britain. Seen in large, flighty flocks, often mixed with redwings. Recognised by grey head, chestnut back and pale, spotted underparts with yellow wash on breast; pale grey rump and white underwings noticeable in flight. Occurs mainly on farmland. Could turn up almost anywhere in Britain and Ireland. Chattering calls often heard, sometimes from night-migrating flocks.
